How Research Peptides Should Be Stored and Handled

Short answer: keep lyophilized (freeze-dried) peptides cold, dry and dark, typically at −20 °C for long-term storage. Once reconstituted, keep the solution refrigerated (2–8 °C), avoid repeated freeze–thaw cycles, and follow your laboratory’s procedures and the product’s stated conditions.

Lyophilized peptides

  • Temperature: −20 °C is a common long-term condition; some peptides tolerate refrigeration or room temperature for short periods, such as during shipping.
  • Moisture: peptides can absorb water from the air. Let a cold vial reach room temperature before opening it, so condensation does not form inside.
  • Light and air: store in the original sealed vial, away from light. Peptides containing residues such as methionine, cysteine or tryptophan are more prone to oxidation.

Reconstitution

  • Use the diluent your protocol specifies, such as sterile water or bacteriostatic water (sterile water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol).
  • Add the diluent slowly down the side of the vial and swirl gently rather than shaking, which can damage some peptides.
  • Work aseptically and label each vial with the date and concentration.

Reconstituted peptides

  • Refrigerate at 2–8 °C, protected from light.
  • If longer storage is needed, divide the solution into single-use aliquots and freeze them, so the bulk is not repeatedly frozen and thawed.
  • Stability in solution varies by peptide; follow the supplier’s guidance and your lab’s SOPs.

Shipping and receiving

Lyophilized peptides are generally stable for short transit times. On arrival, check that the seal is intact, then move vials to the recommended storage temperature.

Record keeping

Record lot numbers, receipt dates and storage conditions, so any result can be traced back to a specific batch and its COA.
